By Randy Valdres

I grew up with Oliver, but never really got to know him as a true friend until after he was diagnosed with cancer. It was during this time that he and I would regularly go out for lunch, usually in search for the perfect burger, which I'm sure he is thoroughly enjoying at this very moment. I wanted to speak here today to make very clear that his passing was by no means a tragedy and that his life, to me, is a celebration of many wonderful things. I believe Oliver could have easily succeeded at any profession and that by choosing to be a teacher, he appropriately placed himself in a position to help people on a grand scale. Like his life, this decision was practical and efficient; focused on what he believed would better himself and more importantly, others. I'll miss you Oliver. Your friendship was an incredible gift; one I will cherish for the remainder of my life. Finally, your suffering is over. Rest in peace.
